Humboldt county sheriff’s investigators just completed a second search at Miranda’s rescue animal sanctuary on sandy prairie road in fortuna California. They recovered 117 intact dog remains plus 21 skulls and hundreds of bones from the property. Many of the dogs showed clear evidence of bullet fragments and gunshot wounds according to USDA veterinarians on scene.

Authorities also found what they believe was a killing area inside a barn along with more than 600 dog collars. This latest discovery comes after an earlier search turned up at least eight dogs that had been shot in the head and buried. Since January 2025 roughly 900 dogs were sent to the rescue from shelters across California including Oakland Berkeley and napa county. Only around 100 adoptions have been confirmed leaving more than 700 animals unaccounted for.

The ongoing investigation into owner Shannon Miranda includes allegations of animal cruelty fraud and conspiracy. multiple agencies including the FBI, USDA and California department of justice are involved. No arrest has been made yet and the rescue is still operating under monitoring.
